Political activities

Mr. Shahriar Alam joined Awami League in 1991with a view to take part in active politics.
Mr. Alam’s political career came to fruition with him being elected as Member of Parliament in the 9th national parliamentary elections in 2008 from Rajshahi – 6 (Charghat – Bagha) constituency winning on the highest margin ever (28,000 votes, or, 56% of the electorate) amongst the six constituencies of Rajshahi division. Mr. Alam is a true representative of the new generation of people getting involved in politics and parliament to build a strong and vibrant Bangladesh. Mr. Alam took part in the discussion panel in the parliament session on Budget and Poverty Reduction Plan. He presented notice of motion (general, 147/1) in the 7th session of current Parliament on “Nuclear Power Project” that was passed unanimously. He has earned appreciation from senior parliamentarians for his proactive role in constructive participation in various parliamentary roles over the last two years. Mr. Alam has maintained excellent relations with the foreign diplomatic core based in Bangladesh. Of note, Mr. Alam took the unusual step of introducing monthly scholarship programs with the remuneration earned as an Member of Parliament for Junior School students in Rajshahi district

Md. Shahriar Alam was elected a member of Rajshahi-6 (Bagha-Charghat) constituency no 56 of the Jatiya Sangsad located in Rajshahi District in the 2014 general elections. He has been working as an active member of Bangladesh Awami League since 1997. He was elected a member of the Jatiya Sangsad for the first time from the Rajshahi-6 constituency in the maximum parliamentary elections in the 2008 parliamentary elections. While working as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information of the Jatiya Sangsad, he worked for the finalization of the draft of the Right to Information Act. Besides, he is a member of Standing Committee on Ministry of Science and Technology related to the Jatiya Sangsad, All Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change, Education and Poverty Alleviation and MDG, PRSP, World Trade Organization and Vice Chairman of All Party Parliamentary Group regarding Bangladesh Development Forum. Shahriar Alam has served as a member of the Parliament Committee on the preview committee. He was earlier a member of the Sub-Committee on Awami League’s information, research and publicity and publication.
