State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam on Tuesday urged the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to remain “engaged” with Myanmar on the subject of Rohingya repatriation.
The minister made the request during a meeting with Regional Representative of UNHCR, James Lynch, at the parliament building in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Shahriar asked the UNHCR to continue their engagement with the government of Myanmar, towards creating “a conducive environment in the Rakhine State to ensure safe and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland.”
The UNHCR representative briefed the state minister about the recently signed tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) by Myanmar with UNHCR and UNDP.
This MoU provides a framework for further cooperation between Myanmar and the UN (UNHCR and UNDP) towards creating condition or facilities for the returnee Rohingyas in Myanmar, including assisting their resettlement and reintegration.
Bangladesh has already engaged UNHCR in the repatriation by signing two MoUs of cooperation.
